Olympic swimmer and gold medalist Michael Phelps may not have Marfan syndrome but he certainly has people talking about it.

In recent weeks there have been conflicting media reports that his long arms, slender physique and increased flexibility are signs he has the incurable condition, but an excerpt from his autobiography assures his fans he is disease-free.

Marfan syndrome is a genetic disease where the body's connective tissue is defective.

Because connective tissue is present throughout the body, this condition can affect many systems, including the skeleton, eyes, heart and blood vessels, nervous systems, skin and lungs, the National Marfan Foundation said on its Web site.

In the book, “Michael Phelps: Beneath the Surface,” Phelps describes how he first got to be checked at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.

My heart rate was accelerating and Bob suggested I see the doctor. Because I was very flexible and had long hands and feet, I had some early symptoms of Marfan syndrome, a disease that affects connective tissues and can be fatal if there is leakage to the vessels that lead to the heart. If you reach out your arms and form a T and your wingspan is longer than your height, you can be at risk. In my case, those measurements have always been very close. I didn't know at the time why the doctor decided to look into this. My mom and Bob didn't want me to freak out, so they told me it was simply a good idea for young athletes to have an EKG test in order to look at the heart.

Fortunately everything was, and still is, okay. I have been tested once a year ever since at John's Hopkins under the direction of Dr. Peter Roe, and the tissues are strong, the aortic route is clear and my heart is in good shape - as long as my Baltimore Ravens are winning."

Dr. Reed Pyeritz, chief of the medical division of genetics at the University of Pennsylvania, said Phelps’ features certainly fit the criteria of a Marfan patient – but it could also fit anyone in the general population.

“So I would never dissuade anybody, a physician in particular, from suspecting Marfan syndrome,” Pyeritz said. “But, if that’s all there was, the likelihood would be relatively low.”

Other characteristics of Marfan patients include:

— protruding or concave sternum

— curvature of the spine

— dislocation of one or both eye lenses

— stretch marks, even without weight gain

— arching of the roof of the mouth, which may cause crowding of teeth

— enlargement of the aorta

— restrictive lung disease

Marfan syndrome may present itself in many different ways, according to the Foundation's Web site: Some patients are mildly affected and have only a few of these characteristics, while others are severely affected.

“The enlargement of the aorta can be present before birth or during childhood,” Pyeritz said. “But, in an adult male, if he had Marfan syndrome, it would be present. And, if they were looking for the disease, they would have detected the enlarged aorta already. I’m sure (Michael Phelps) had an echocardiogram already, and then he probably wouldn’t be swimming since physical activity is restricted.”

There are 200,000 people in the United States who have the disease or a related connective tissue disorder, said Eileen Masciale, director of communication for the National Marfan Foundation, which is located in Port Washington, N.Y.

Of those people, 50,000 to 60,000 have Marfan syndrome, she said, and about half of them are undiagnosed.

Marfan patients can live well into their 70s with proper treatment, which is why it is so important to be checked out, Masciale said.

In 1986, Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman died of complications from Marfan syndrome. It is suspected that John Larson, writer of the Broadway musical "Rent," who died of an aortic aneurysm, also had the disease.

“Hyman had been checked countless times for college, for the Olympics, and no one suspected Marfan syndrome,” Pyeritz said.

However, soon after her death, an article ran in Sports Illustrated about the disease and a number of people with Marfan characteristics rushed to their doctors.

Pyeritz said he saw an increased number of patients that year.

“We wound up diagnosing a number of people,” he said. “There is great value in publicizing the features. The vast majority won’t have it based on flexible joints or long arms, but there will be a few who do have it and we will be able to save their lives.”

I can fly with the best 'em; however, when I'm down low..I'm really down low.
Admitting this, without fear, has been a focus/focal point, I've been uncomfortable about setting into a blog-post.

After a long, drawn-out, illness; one which has cropped-up, over the last 2 years, with almost timed regularity, I've reached a point where darkness is "visible" [thank you, William Styron, for the insight]...

...Marfan Syndrome, tied as it is to the connective tissue, doesn't mix well with depression; as one goes through stress, the heart goes through stress, and the muscles go through stress, and this leads to problems.

I've lashed out, in my frustration at people..just as my father, lashes out at me, in his frustration. Apologies, sometimes are the most difficult & hurting aspects, when your sensitivities are aroused.

Now, I've made a decision to combine 3 blogs into one. I love writing poetry. I love writing "spanking stories." And, yes, I love celebrating Birthday's.

It was a beautiful day, for a walk; more like August, than the beginning of October. Today, while taking my daily Constitutional, I had the Sugasm on my brain.

The Sugasm, (or, Sugasm, as it's commonly called) celebrates it's 100th Post on Monday, October 8th, [Columbus Day, in the USA] 2007. The blog is a collecting of submissions; sex blog, sexy, submissions. It is a weekly digest, which promotes "the best of the week's sex blogs."

100 posts, and thousand's of submissions later, my daily constitutional (10 miles, walking), got me to thinking about, "why Sugasm Matters"; to me, and the people who read it; why, it matters to those who submit their work~~their creativity~~sometimes, on a weekly basis.

For those who have never heard of Sugasm, (and, I'm sure there must be someone in Blogville, who hasn't) please forgive my celebratory post. Maybe, just maybe, you'll be curious enough to check out Sugasm, or submit your own post, next week...(for "Sugasm #101")...

...But until then, if you want more Sugar, you can click the link at the bottom of this post.

So, back to my walk! I carry a little notebook with me wherever I go. It's tucked into the back pocket of my jeans. I always carry a pen. As I walked, I thought about "Why Sugasm Matters"...10 miles, slow walking, enjoying the day, and taking notes.

I wrote down 20 reasons why Sugasm Matters.

Here they are:

1.] Collectively, Sugasm, is far more stimulating than "Tales of The Arabian Night's."

2.] It's Sugar...but, anything BUT fattening.

3.] It's a helluva lot better for you than kegel's!!

4.] If you know what Sugasm is, than you not only understand this blog post~~You're Sexy!!

5.] If you're a contributor, (writer; or, one who submits) to Sugasm, you're a member (or, vagina) of a community of sexy, uninhibited, sex bloggers, who are passionate (ie: "horny") about, not only sex, but, Politics & Poetry as well. That's right, Poetry (the Goooood kind!)

6.] If you're a reader, [lurker, blog-poster, writer who doesn't submit, or commenter] of Sugasm, each week, you'll gain more knowledge, than you will ever find in, "Everything you've Always wanted to Know About Sex," "The Joy of Sex," or, "The Kinsey Report."

7.] Even though "sexual fantasy" is not a substitute for sex...it's better than nothing!

~~There's so much I could tell you, but I won't. Just the facts:.
I'm glad I checked into the hospital.

I didn't stay in, as long as I thought I'd be in~~and, (believe it, or not) even the food tasted good. I've got to STOP smoking (Joining the Program!)~~

The small blood vessels have been effected by the cigs, causing the arteries to work all the harder. Why I ever continued to smoke, (even after a spontaneous collapsed lung. [Well, I did stop for a year. I was 18 years old!]) is beyond me.

~~I've got my Meds under control. Depression is a bitch...(tonight, I'm not even worried about the stigma of Mental Illness) Honesty tells me I'm not alone;...

...not the only only one seeing a doctor, on an Out-patient basis.

(There is so much I could tell you, but I won't)

James Johnston, sent me a letter, informing me that, "The Museum, being a virtual landmark, for years, would be most pleased with showing your Collection, via the Web."

I must say, I was bowled over~ ~("stunned", of course, is a better word; however, bowling has always been a pleasant past-time, and I lean in the direction of literalism, when the use of an adjective is necessary!)

In any event,~~ keeping in mind, that this is entirely "fiction"~~I doffed my Artist's hat, and put on my Artist's Mask, and joyfully gave up any sense of humility...

...ALL in the matter of a half-hour of Web-searching.

I must say, the results of these "wanderings" turned up some extraordinary Works! "The Sexual Themes of the Artist's Work," proclaimed WebARTS Magazine, "Is bound to cause giggles & wet panties for Years To Come."

Simon Schama, Professor of Art History at Columbia University, wrote, "The first word which comes to mind, while viewing this outrageous collection is:
PILFERAGE."

His review, in ARTWEEK, went on to conclude: "If anything, NewYorkBoy's Collection, inspired me to investigate the life of Caravaggio."

Needless to say, The Web-Show was shut down, after one day of viewings.

[the site, I believe, exceeded the "search-engine HIT LIST" numbers at Google; caused 3,000 computers, nationwide, to crash unexpectedly; and, if that were not enough, caused power outages, (for the week of August 25th, 2007) throughout the Metropolitan Area~~including, Queens & Nassau County)

~~all of which, keep in mind, is fabrication (For Art's Sake!)~~

So..yes! I admit it. I confess!

I claimed them as a legitimate "Collection" of Major artists, and used some of my own photographs, to create this impression. [What to do now!

Can names change the Universe? How about many "persona's," given voice; and, a tremulous re-working upon the themes of ones life.

At this point in my life, (in the cyberworld) I'm known by many names. These names, aka's all, have brought me joy, as well as sadness; a name, my friends, can change a person.

[When you're born, you are given a name. The name becomes your skin; your laughter; and your life. Those who are in your orbit, see your parents, and your ancestors, in your name. It was given to you; however, what the name says about you, began in the mind of your Mother & Father.]

I don't know where this Universe, begins & ends for me.

What I do know, is that mostly, this writing and sharing has been a comfort; a piece of my heart (no matter how "naughty," or persona-filled.)

Let's try to get along in this Universe. I have hurt people, and myself in this Universe, but I know it was never intentional~~until, of course, I had to defend myself.

All we, as Bloggers, can do is try to share what we can. It doesn't really matter what name, or persona, we use. All we can do is hope for some type of understanding. Because the world can be a scary place, where a heartbeat~~each heartbeat~~can change an individual life, I've decided to "keep on, keepin' on," as the great Civil Rights Leaders said, 40 years ago.

Only this time, (and, Lord knows, there have been MANY TIMES!) I'll be using my "real" name. Instead of "Bill" I'm expanding this Universe, once again...
